Kangaroo is a four-screen platform game for Atari 2600, featuring a mother kangaroo wearing boxing gloves trying to save her joey from fruit-throwing monkeys. The game doesn’t have a dedicated jump button; instead, players push the joystick up or up-diagonally to jump.
The game consists of four distinct levels. In levels 1, 2, and 4, the mother kangaroo must navigate platforms and ladders to reach her captured joey on the top floor. She must dodge or punch apples and apple cores thrown by monkeys while collecting fruits for points. By jumping and touching a bell, higher-value fruits appear. Players should be cautious of the big ape, who attempts to steal the kangaroo’s gloves. Each level must be completed before time runs out, or the player loses a life.
In level 3, the joey is trapped in a monkey-held cage, with a horde of apples ready to be unleashed. The mother kangaroo must punch the monkey stack multiple times to lower the cage. Once lowered enough, she must climb to the next floor before the cage is raised again.
Kangaroo has some noticeable graphical glitches, such as flickering sprites. The game features classical and folk songs, including Beethoven’s “Turkish March” (game start), F. W. Meacham’s “American Patrol” (regular gameplay), Stephen Foster’s “Oh! Susanna” (level completion fanfare), and “Westminster Quarters” (when a bell is rung).
