Role-playing games were rare on the Atari 2600, because building characters, fighting monsters and collecting gear takes more memory than most cartridges had. This genre has two early attempts. Dragonstomper, by Stephen Landrum for the Starpath Supercharger, has you fight, shop and recruit helpers before facing a dragon. Crypts of Chaos (Fox Video Games, 1983) is a first-person dungeon crawl best played with a pencil and a hand-drawn map.
