Kamikaze Saucers

Prototype

Kamikaze Saucers is an unreleased 1983 Atari 2600 shooter from Syncro, programmed by Dan Wolf. It is a fixed-screen shooter in the style of Demon Attack and Atlantis: saucers fly across the sky and you have to shoot them down before they turn on you. The game was never sold, but the prototype survived, and you can play it here in your browser.

Gameplay

Saucers buzz back and forth across the screen, and your job is to destroy them. Take too long and they go on the attack: three large ships dive at you from the top of the screen, and if you can’t shoot them before they reach you, you lose a life. Your shots do not go straight up. As in Atlantis, they are angled towards the centre of the screen, and you have two ammo meters, one for firing from the left and one for firing from the right, so you need to keep an eye on both.

History

Syncro is not known to have made any other 2600 game. The company ran full-page magazine adverts for Kamikaze Saucers, but the game never appeared on any release list, and collectors long assumed it had never even been started. That changed when Dan Wolf gave the ROM image to AtariAge to share with the community. Like many games of 1983, it was a victim of bad timing, arriving just as the video game market was collapsing.
