Telepathy was a prototype game developed for Atari’s Mindlink controller, an innovative yet ultimately failed attempt to create a more immersive gaming experience. The Mindlink controller was a headband that players wore, connecting to the joystick port of their gaming system. The controller was designed to detect facial movements and muscle twitches, theoretically allowing players to control the game with their thoughts or facial expressions.
Unfortunately, the Mindlink controller did not perform well in initial tests, often failing to accurately detect and translate players’ facial movements into in-game actions. Furthermore, players reported experiencing headaches and dizziness after using the controller for extended periods, as the constant facial twitching required to operate the device proved uncomfortable and tiring.
Due to the disappointing test results and the potential health risks associated with prolonged use, Atari decided to cancel the Mindlink controller project. As a result, Telepathy and any other games designed specifically for the Mindlink controller were never released to the public.
