Missing In Action

Prototype

Missing in Action is an unreleased Atari 7800 beat 'em up based on the Chuck Norris film series, programmed by Sculptured Software for TNT Games around 1989. As Colonel James Braddock you escape a prison camp and fight through jungles, rivers, rooftops and sewers. The surviving prototype is about 85% complete. You can play it here in your browser.

How to play Missing in Action online

  • Walk and crouch: arrow keys
  • Jump: Z or X when no enemy is near. Hold down-left or down-right while pressing it for a longer jump.
  • Fight: near an enemy, Z kicks, X punches, down ducks and up jumps straight up
  • Boat: left speeds up, right slows down
  • Invincibility on/off: F5 (left difficulty switch)
  • Level select: F6 (right difficulty switch), only at the start of a game

Gameplay

It is 1972, and Braddock must escape a prison camp in Vietnam, free the other prisoners, liberate the American embassy and defeat a drug lord. The side-scrolling mission has five phases and 12 levels. It includes a boat ride and bosses such as a man with a flamethrower. Because the game is unfinished, the food and ammunition you can pick up seem to do nothing. Two levels cannot be beaten normally because of bugs, so you need the level select to see the ending.

About this prototype

Sculptured Software programmed it for TNT Games, with Chuck Peavey as programmer. The programmer has confirmed it was at or near completion, but it was never released, most likely because the 7800 market was too small by then. AtariAge member Mitch later acquired the only known prototype and shared the ROM.
