How to use the Atari 7800 online emulator
- Click Choose a ROM file above, or drag the file onto the black screen.
- The emulator loads and the cartridge starts. Press F3 (Reset) to begin a game; F2 (Select) changes the options on most title screens.
- To try another file, reload the page and choose again.
Supported files
Use .a78 files. They start with a small header that tells the emulator the cartridge size, the type of memory chips and whether the game is NTSC or PAL, so the right settings are picked automatically.
Controls
The arrow keys move the joystick and Z / X are the two fire buttons. F3 is Reset, F2 is Select, F4 pauses, F5 / F6 set the difficulty switches and F9 toggles full screen. Player 2 uses I J K L with N and M. This emulator has no save states.
If a ROM does not start
- Check that it is an Atari 7800 file. The 7800 console can also play Atari 2600 cartridges, but this emulator cannot: load 2600 ROMs in the Atari 2600 online emulator instead.
- A file without the .a78 header may not start, because the emulator cannot tell what kind of cartridge it is.
- Some homebrews use extra sound hardware and may play without music or not at all.
About the emulator
The emulator is JS7800, an open-source Atari 7800 emulator for the browser by raz0red. The cartridge is read from your disk into the page and is not uploaded to our server. Please use only ROM files you have the right to use.
Prefer to play right away?
Every Atari 7800 game on this site is ready to play without any file: see the A–Z listing, or start with Centipede, Ms. Pac-Man or Klax.
