Behind Jaggi Lines!

Prototype

Behind Jaggi Lines! is the working title of Rescue on Fractalus!, Lucasfilm Games' first-person flying game about rescuing pilots from a planet of fractal mountains. This is a pre-release build from early 1984, made before the name changed; Atari published the finished 5200 cartridge later. You can play this early version here in your browser.

Gameplay

You fly down into the valleys of Fractalus looking for crashed pilots. Land near one, open the airlock when he reaches your ship, and move on, shooting the Jaggi gun positions that fire at you. Once you have rescued at least half your quota the mother ship comes to collect you. Suicide saucers join in from level four, and from level 16 the missions take place at night.

About this prototype

Rescue on Fractalus! was one of the first two games from Lucasfilm’s Games Group, led by Peter Langston, with David Fox as project leader. AtariProtos says it began as a non-violent game called Rescue Mission; the guns came after George Lucas asked where the fire button was. The Jaggi name is a joke about “jaggies”, the stair-step edges the graphics could not smooth out, and Atari’s marketing people dropped the title because they feared buyers would not get it. Two Behind Jaggi Lines builds are known, from January and February 1984, both nearly complete. Atari Corporation finally sold the renamed game for the 5200 in 1986, in small numbers.
