Armor Ambush is an Atari 2600 game, originally released in 1979 as Armor Battle for the Intellivision console. It allows players to control tanks engaged in combat across diverse terrains with varying degrees of navigability. The theme of dueling tanks was already familiar to Atari 2600 owners due to the similar premise of Combat, the game packaged with nearly every Atari 2600 system.
However, Armor Ambush expands upon the simpler battles found in Combat. The game features different randomly selected battlefields for each round, and players can strategically place mines on the battlefield by simultaneously pressing the fire button and pulling down on the joystick. These mines remain active for the entire battle, destroying any tank that runs over them.
Players have the ability to control two tanks, switching between them on command. The terrain in Armor Ambush is more diverse, including areas of foliage, water, and natural barriers. Despite these added features, the game shares a limitation with Combat in that there is no AI for computer opponents, so it cannot be played solo.
