About “Commando Raid” for Atari 2600
“Commando Raid” is an engaging, full-color, arcade-style game for a single player, developed for play on the Atari Video Computer System or the Sears Video Arcade. In this game, players defend their structures against an onslaught of android commando raiders. These adversaries emerge suddenly, aiming to seize the buildings and obliterate your artillery position.
The assault begins with helicopters deploying android paratroopers to evaluate your defenses. The air soon fills with the enemy, including helicopters and paratroopers, all of which you must eliminate. Any paratrooper reaching a building partially destroys it, and three landings result in its complete destruction, marking it as controlled by the commandos.
Furthermore, the androids start digging towards your artillery placement. Each paratrooper landing on this specific building advances their tunneling effort, potentially setting an explosive charge beneath your gun if not halted.
Occasionally, a bomber aircraft will appear, threatening to drop a bomb capable of annihilating all structures and your gun position. It’s crucial to shoot down either the aircraft or its bomb to prevent disaster.

Setup Instructions
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to connect your Atari Video Computer System or Sears Video Arcade.
- Plug in the left joystick controller. The right joystick is not utilized.
- Ensure the power is off before inserting the game cartridge.
- Turn the power switch to ON.
- Use the left and right difficulty switches along with the TV TYPE switch to select your desired game variation.
- Begin the game by moving the joystick forward.
- Press the RESET switch at any time to restart the game.
- Start a new game after finishing by moving the joystick forward again.
Scoring System
- Helicopters or bombers: 200 points each.
- Commando paratroopers or bombs: 115 points each.
Rewards
Earn a replacement building for every 10,000 points scored, replacing the most damaged one, signaled by a bell.
Gameplay Levels
The game features eight levels, each represented by a different color of the paratrooper squad and increasing numbers of paratroopers in each helicopter attack.
Game Variation Options
- COLOR SWITCH: Toggles anti-aircraft fire control between manual (Color) and automatic (Black & White).
- LEFT DIFFICULTY SWITCH: Chooses between straight bullets (Position A) and steerable missiles (Position B).
- RIGHT DIFFICULTY SWITCH: Controls the presence of the Bomber; no bomber (Position A) or active bomber (Position B).
