Congo Bongo is an arcade platform game developed by Sega in 1983 and later released for the Atari 2600. The game shares some gameplay elements and similarities with Nintendo’s Donkey Kong from 1981, but it features an isometric perspective similar to Sega’s Zaxxon, released in Japan in late 1981.
In Congo Bongo, players control a large-nosed protagonist whose main ability is to jump. The game consists of four different single-screen stages, with the primary goal of the first stage being to climb to the top, much like Donkey Kong. Both games involve a primate antagonist who throws objects at the player from a vantage point atop a structure. Additionally, the graphics of the bonus timer in Congo Bongo are reminiscent of those in Donkey Kong.
Despite the similarities, Congo Bongo distinguishes itself with its unique isometric perspective and its own set of challenges and obstacles that players must overcome as they navigate through the stages in their quest to defeat the primate antagonist.
