Klax (NTSC)

Klax (NTSC) is the American-format build of Atari's 2600 conversion of the Klax arcade puzzle game, programmed by Steve DeFrisco. Unlike the PAL version, it was never sold: Atari finished it in 1990 but only released the game in Europe. You can play this unreleased build here in your browser.

How to play Klax (NTSC) online

  • Move the paddle: left and right arrow keys
  • Drop the top tile into the bin below: Space bar
  • Make the tiles tumble faster: down arrow

You catch coloured tiles as they roll down a ramp and drop them into five bins, lining up three or more of one colour to make a “Klax”. The rules, waves, scoring and remaining controls are explained on the Klax (PAL) page.

Why this version was never released

Klax is often described as the last official game released for the 2600, but that is true only of the PAL cartridge. By 1990 the American 2600 market was falling apart, so Atari decided to sell Klax only in Europe. The NTSC version was never put on sale. Years later Best Electronics found nine NTSC prototypes, which AtariProtos considers the final version of the game, and they show that a US release had been planned. AtariProtos dates a nearly complete build to 14 June 1990 and the final NTSC build to 18 August 1990, more than a year before the final PAL build.
