Lochjaw

Lochjaw is a 1982 maze game from Games by Apollo, designed and programmed by Steve Stringfellow. As a deep-sea diver you collect diamonds from a sunken galleon while sharks sweep across the screen and the Loch Ness Monster lurks in the caves. It is the original release of the game Apollo soon renamed Shark Attack. You can play it here in your browser.

How to play Lochjaw online

  • Swim in eight directions: arrow keys (press two together for diagonals)
  • Choose one of the 16 game variations: F11 (the console’s Select switch)
  • Start a new game: F12 (the console’s Reset switch)

Why Lochjaw became Shark Attack

Lochjaw came out in June 1982. Soon afterwards MCA, the parent company of Universal Pictures and owner of Jaws, objected to the “jaw” in the title. Apollo president Pat Roper chose to rename the game rather than go to court, so later cartridges were sold as Shark Attack. The two releases differ only slightly, and the short run of Lochjaw cartridges makes them rare collector’s items today.
