Motocross

Motocross is a little-known motorbike racing game for the Atari 2600. The German mail-order company Quelle sold it in Europe around 1983, and the same title also appeared on cartridges made in Taiwan and sold under other labels. Who wrote the game is not known. It is a simple, one-player race seen from above, with a fuel gauge to watch. You can play it here in your browser.

Gameplay

The box of one of the Taiwanese editions describes it as a handicap race. You set off with a full tank, and a counter at the bottom of the screen shows how many riders you still have to overtake to take the lead. Your fuel gauge drops as you ride, so you have to pick up the fuel cans along the track, which are marked with pennants. Once you are in front, a new race begins. The distance you have covered and the number of scenes you have passed are shown at the bottom of the screen. There is only one game mode, for one player. The pennants are the thing to watch for: overtaking is pointless if your tank runs dry.
