Name This Game and Win $10,000, often shortened to Name This Game, is an action game developed by U.S. Games for the Atari 2600. In this game, players take on the role of a scuba diver who must protect a treasure from an octopus located at the top of the screen. The octopus attempts to grab the treasure with its tentacles while a great white shark swims back and forth near the bottom of the screen, trying to distract and capture the diver.
The player loses a life if the diver is caught by the shark, captured by the octopus’s tentacles, or if the air meter runs out. To refill the air meter, the diver must touch a long pole extending from a boat that appears periodically on the screen. The player’s goal is to defend the treasure and survive as long as possible, achieving a high score.
The game is notable for its unique marketing strategy, where the publisher held a contest to name the game with a $10,000 prize. However, due to the video game crash of 1983, the company went out of business before the contest could be completed, and the game became known by its original contest-inspired title.
