Night Stalker

Night Stalker on the Atari 2600 is a later reissue of Dark Cavern, the maze shooter Mattel Electronics released under its M Network label in 1982. Telegames brought it back for the PAL market in the late 1980s and gave it the name of the Intellivision game it was adapted from. The gameplay is the same as Dark Cavern: you roam an underground maze, shoot robots and try not to run out of bullets. You can play it here in your browser.

How to play Night Stalker online

  • Move: arrow keys (your man keeps running until he hits a wall)
  • Shoot: hold an arrow key in the direction you want to fire and press Space
  • Start a new game: F12 (the console’s Reset switch)
  • Difficulty: F4 toggles the left difficulty switch (B starts with one-headed robots, A with the tougher two-headed ones)

Gameplay in brief

You have five men and a limited supply of bullets. Robots are the only enemies that shoot, spiders freeze you for a moment, and blobs drain your ammunition. Now and then a gun appears that gives you more. Shooting robots in quick succession raises their colour and point value, and the top colour brings an extra man. The full rules, scoring table and tips are on the Dark Cavern page.

How it differs from Dark Cavern

The main visible difference is the screen layout. In Night Stalker the score, reserve men and bullet counters sit above the playfield, while in the American Dark Cavern they are shown inside it. As a PAL cartridge it was also made for 50 Hz European televisions. Despite the name, it is not the Intellivision Night Stalker: that original, designed by Steve Montero, has bats and a safe bunker, which the 2600 version does not.
