Sorcerer’s Apprentice

Sorcerer's Apprentice is a 1983 Atari 2600 game based on the Mickey Mouse segment of Disney's film Fantasia. Peter Niday designed and programmed it, with music by Robert Vieira, and Atari released it in December 1983 for younger players. Mickey must stop enchanted brooms from flooding the Sorcerer's cavern, running between a starry mountain top and a staircase below. You can play it here in your browser, with nothing to install.

About Atari 2600 Sorcerer’s Apprentice

How to play Sorcerer’s Apprentice online

  • Move Mickey: arrow keys
  • Throw a fireball: Space, then steer it with the arrow keys
  • Choose a game speed: F11 (Select)
  • Start a game: F12 (Reset) or Space
  • Single shots or rapid fire: F4 (left difficulty switch: A = one fireball per press, B = continuous fire)

Gameplay

On the mountain, stars and meteors fall from the sky. Every star that drops between the peaks becomes a broom carrying water into the cavern. Catch stars in Mickey’s magic hat by standing under them, or hit them with fireballs. A meteor you hit turns into two empty buckets that bail water out.

Run off either side of the mountain and Mickey heads down to the cavern, where he stops brooms on the staircase by running into them. A gauge at the bottom always shows the water level, and the game ends when the cavern floods. Listen out: the Sorcerer’s Apprentice tune plays whenever the water level changes.

Tips

  • Balance the two screens. Go down when the water climbs, and back up when you run out of empty buckets.
  • Leave the cavern by the doorway. Running off the stairs also works, but the doorway is quicker.
  • Stay away from the staircase edges. It is easy to fall off and end up back on the mountain.

History

The instructions folded out into a Mickey poster with the story printed on the back. Reviews were mixed: Atari Age magazine called it a treat for the whole family, while Video Games magazine found it disappointing next to Pigs in Space and Snoopy and the Red Baron. Britain’s TV Gamer liked the graphics and recommended it to young players and Disney fans.
