Sssnake, a 1982 Atari 2600 game developed by Data Age, has gameplay reminiscent of Centipede but with the player positioned at the center of the screen, shooting towards the edges. While exploring the Amazon, you become the prey of ancient beasts. Upon discovering a fortress equipped with a large weapon, you must fend off snakes and shoot creatures through gaps in the brick walls.
The snakes slither across the screen, moving one level lower as they reverse direction. Though you cannot eliminate the snake, you can reduce its length by shooting it. Your gun, which operates on a track within the fortress walls, always fires away from the fortress. You can only shoot through the gaps in the bricks, not the bricks themselves. In the first game mode, snakes enter the screen from one side at a rapid pace. In the second mode, they emerge from any side but move more slowly. You have only one life in both modes. To start the second player’s turn, press the button on the right joystick. To restart the game after both players’ turns, press the reset button. You earn one point for each ancient creature you shoot, while shooting bricks or the snake yields no points.
