World End

World End is a 1983 shoot 'em up sold in Europe on the Home Vision label, whose cartridges were made by Gem International. A huge alien mothership hangs at the top of the screen, smaller craft break away from it, and you defend the ground from a laser cannon at the bottom. Like many European cartridges of the time, it was sold under a whole list of other names. You can play it here in your browser.

Gameplay

The game plays like a Space Invaders variant with a single giant enemy. The alien station fills the top of the screen above a dotted line, and smaller saucers leave it and fly down towards you while firing. Your laser base slides along the ground at the bottom and shoots a long vertical beam. Your remaining bases are shown as markers under the ground. No manual is known to survive for any release, so the scoring and the exact rules are not documented. A German catalogue for the Laser Base version promised galactic robots attacking with death rays, spiders and destroyer probes.

Other names for this game

The Home Vision cartridge carries the catalogue number VCS 83109. In Germany ITT Family Games sold the same game as Laser Base, as part of its range themed on the Perry Rhodan science-fiction series, and the mail-order company Quelle also sold a World End cartridge. Other known titles include The End of the World, Weltuntergang, Invasion aus der Galaxis, War Stars and Space War, and Bit Corporation put it on a four-game cartridge as Laser Blaser. The programmer is unknown.
