Hell Driver

Hell Driver is a little-known Atari 2600 racing cartridge sold in Germany by ITT Family Games. It is not an original game: it is the same cartridge that the Belgian label Home Vision sold as Racing Car, and Funvision released it as Grand Prize. ITT Family Games relabelled several Home Vision games for the German market this way. The label shows a pack of cars racing on a motorway. You can try it here in your browser.

How to play Hell Driver online

  • Steer: arrow keys
  • Fire button: Space bar
  • If the arrow keys do nothing: try the Player 2 keys (T, F, G, H to steer and A for the button). The cartridge appears to read the joystick in the right-hand port.
  • Start a new game: F12 (the console’s Reset switch)
  • Choose a game variation: F11 (the console’s Select switch)

Gameplay

You race your car along a road seen from above, sharing it with other cars. No manual text or detailed description has turned up, so the exact rules, scoring and variations are not documented. The game plays the same as Racing Car, so anything you learn on one works on the other.

About the ITT Family Games release

ITT Family Games was a German label that sold Home Vision games under new names. Some were given themes from popular German characters, such as the Perry Rhodan science-fiction series and the goblin Pumuckl. Hell Driver was a PAL cartridge for European televisions, with the catalogue number 554-37 729 printed on its label. An NTSC conversion made by the programmer Thomas Jentzsch lets it run on American-standard systems.
