Ocean City Defender

Ocean City Defender is an unlicensed copy of Imagic's 1982 shooter Atlantis, sold in Canada by the Zellers department store chain. Like the other Zellers cartridges, it was made in Taiwan and given a new name. The game underneath is Dennis Koble's Atlantis with a few cosmetic changes: you still guard an underwater city with three fixed cannons against waves of attacking ships. You can play it here in your browser.

What is different from Atlantis

The changes are small. The Imagic logo at the bottom of the screen has been replaced with a Funvision logo, and the enemy ships have been redrawn as round UFOs. One collector on AtariMania felt the game plays easier than Atlantis. Everything else, including the centre gun that fires straight up and the two side guns that fire diagonally, works as in the original, so the full rules, scoring and tips on the Atlantis page apply here too.

AtariMania lists the Zellers cartridges under ā€œZellers / Taiwan – 2600 Compatibleā€ and still credits the original programmer, here Dennis Koble. Collectors note that Ocean City Defender is one of the easier Zellers carts to find. If you want to compare, open Atlantis in another tab and play the two side by side.
