Gameplay
In the story, the Red Baron has stolen the alliesā food supplies, and Snoopy sets out to shoot him down and win them back. Each round you face a set number of Red Barons. Both pilots can take eight direct hits: eight of yours bring down a Baron, and eight of his cost you a doghouse. You start with four doghouses, and the game ends when they are all gone.
As he flies, the Baron drops treats such as hamburgers, ice cream and popcorn. Catch them for points. He also drops skulls and crossbones, which you must avoid: touching one takes away the treats you have collected, and so does losing a doghouse. The Baron likes to hide above the clouds, where Snoopy cannot follow.
| Event | Points |
|---|---|
| Hit on the Red Baron | 10 |
| Treat caught in flight | 40 |
| Each treat still held at the end of the round | 50 bonus |
| Each Red Baron shot down (end of round) | 100 bonus |
| All treats recovered in a round | bonus doghouse |
Shoot down fifty Red Barons and you earn a Gold Baron, and an exclamation mark appears for every million points.
Game variations
There are four games. Game 1 is medium, game 2 advanced and game 3 expert. Game 4 is an easy version meant for young children and beginners. The number shown next to the game number tells you how many Red Barons you will meet in each round.
Tips
- Lure him down. When the Baron hides in the clouds, fly low towards the mountains. He will come down after you, into range.
- Protect your treats. Dodging skulls matters more than grabbing every treat, because one skull wipes out everything you have collected.
- Go for the bonus doghouse. Recovering all treats in a round earns an extra life, which is the best way to last longer.
- Start with game 4. It is a good way to learn how the Baron moves before trying the harder games.
History
Atari released Snoopy and the Red Baron in 1983, as one of its games aimed at younger players. It was the only Peanuts game Atari, Inc. actually released; another, called Good Luck, Charlie Brown, was planned but never came out. The game also affected another licensed cartridge: Atariās Bugs Bunny game was shelved after Snoopy did better in play-testing. That Bugs Bunny prototype has since been found and can be played on this site.
