Strawberry Shortcake: Musical Match-ups

Strawberry Shortcake: Musical Match-Ups is a 1983 Atari 2600 puzzle game for young children, published by Parker Brothers and programmed by Dawn Stockbridge. The Purple Pieman has cast a spell over Strawberryland and scrambled the characters' heads, bodies and legs, and you have to put them back together. Each finished character dances to their own tune, which makes it a gentle first video game for small players. You can play it here in your browser.

Gameplay

A mixed-up character appears on screen. You pick a head, a body and a pair of legs, then press the button. If they belong together, the character’s name appears, their theme song plays and they dance. If not, you hear a jumbled tune made from the songs of the parts you chose, and you can try again. The five characters are Strawberry Shortcake, Huckleberry Pie, Blueberry Muffin, Lime Chiffon and the Purple Pieman himself.

The game is for one player and has no score. In the harder games a sun travels across the top of the screen as a timer. If it reaches the other side before you finish the character, the sky goes dark and the game ends.

The six Berry games

  • One Berry: match the parts with no time limit.
  • Two Berry: a name is shown first, and you must remember it and build that character.
  • Three Berry: adds the sun timer at a moderate speed.
  • Four Berry: the same, with a faster sun.
  • Five Berry: you are given a tune instead of a name and must build the character it belongs to, against the timer.
  • Six Berry: the tune game with a faster sun.

Tips

  • Learn the songs in One Berry. Every correct match plays that character’s theme, and you will need to recognise those tunes in games Five and Six.
  • Listen to the wrong answers. The mixed-up tune contains pieces of each part’s song, which tells you which parts are already right.
  • Start with the head. Faces are the easiest part to recognise, so fix the head first and then match the body and legs to it.

History

Strawberry Shortcake was a popular American Greetings character line in the early 1980s, and Parker Brothers brought her to the 2600 as a game for young children, a small corner of the console’s library at the time. Reviews have been lukewarm; AtariAge collects three, with an average of 57%. The cartridge is rated scarce by collectors.
