Pit Fighter

Prototype

Pit Fighter is an unfinished, never-released Atari 7800 conversion of Atari Games' 1990 arcade brawler. This early prototype is a single screen where you punch and kick a group of street fighters, a glimpse of a project dropped when Atari ended 7800 development. You can play it here in your browser.

What’s in the prototype

The arcade Pit-Fighter was known for its large digitised fighters, filmed from real actors. None of that made it into this build. You get one screen with four small opponents who look alike except for the colour of their trousers. They wander around and sometimes swing at you, but they never seem to land a hit. Once you have knocked them all down there is nothing more to do. A white mark near the top left may be an unfinished throwing knife. One fun bug: jump near the bottom of the screen and your fighter can end up floating at the top.

Why it was never released

The conversion is credited to Imagitec Design and is thought to date from around 1992. It was still at a very early stage when Atari stopped all 7800 development in early 1993. The ROM is said to have come from the old computer or development kit of a former Atari developer, but that story has never been confirmed.
