Rampart

Prototype

Rampart is an unfinished Atari 7800 conversion of Atari Games' 1990 arcade castle-defence game, which was never released. Only an early work-in-progress build has surfaced, with a bare title screen and a rough version of the cannon battle. It is a rare look at a late 7800 project. You can try it here in your browser.

What is in this prototype

In the arcade original, released by Atari Games in 1990, you take turns building walls around your castles, placing cannons inside them and firing at enemy ships. This 7800 build contains only a small part of that. The title screen lets you pick a difficulty and the number of players, but the game’s name is missing from it. After that comes an early version of the shooting stage, where the enemy ships are still plain placeholder blocks labelled “NME”. There is no wall-building phase yet.

The story behind the 7800 Rampart

The conversion was started around 1991 by Imagitec Design, but it never came out. Rampart became one of the casualties of the 7800’s decline against the Nintendo Entertainment System. Internal Atari memos from 1993 describe the game as almost finished, so a more complete version may still exist somewhere. The build you can try here was found by Curt Vendel as a partly compiled program, and 7800 fans Robert DeCrescenzo, Mitchell Orman and Eckhard Stolberg got it running on real hardware.
