Dragon Treasure

Dragon Treasure is an unlicensed copy of Dragonfire, the 1982 Imagic game by Bob Smith. This NTSC cartridge was sold in Canada by the Zellers department store chain, one of several Taiwanese-made 2600 games that Zellers carried under new names without the original publishers' permission. The game inside is Dragonfire, so it plays just as well. You can play it here in your browser.

Gameplay

You are a young prince trying to win back a castle full of treasure from the dragons that took it. First you cross a bridge while fireballs fly at you at two heights, ducking the high ones and jumping the low ones. Then the view changes to the treasure room, seen from above, where you collect every item while a dragon at the bottom of the screen breathes fire at you. Take the last item, run for the exit and a faster dragon is waiting on the next round. The Dragonfire page explains the treasure values, variations and tips, and all of it applies here.

Where Dragon Treasure came from

AtariMania files this cartridge under “Zellers / Taiwan โ€“ 2600 Compatible” and credits Dragonfire’s programmer, Robert G. Smith, which shows that the code is Imagic’s. AtariAge rates the Zellers cartridge as rare. The game travelled widely under other labels too: a Brazilian Dragon Treasure from CCE, and versions called Dragon, Castelo Mal Assombrado and King Arthur, among others. Zellers sold other copies the same way, including the three listed below.
