Words-Attack

Prototype

Words-Attack is a letter-shooting game for the Atari 2600 from Sancho, the brand of Tang's Electronic Co., with a 1983 copyright on its label. It is one of the rarest 2600 cartridges: it only resurfaced in 2002, and collectors rank it as the hardest to find of all Sancho games. It plays like a simple invaders game in which most targets are letters. You can play it here in your browser.

How to play Words-Attack online

  • Move your ship: left and right arrow keys
  • Fire: Space bar
  • Start a game: F12 (the console’s Reset switch)
  • Game options: F11 (the console’s Select switch). No manual is known, so what each option does has not been documented.

Gameplay

Your ship sits at the bottom of the screen, and three invaders attack from the top. Between you and them, rows of letters alternate with rows of objects such as fruit, hearts and small creatures. Shoot a letter and it drops into the strip below your ship, so you gradually build up a row of letters. Be careful what you hit: shooting one of the objects, or being hit by an enemy shot, costs you a life and removes a letter from your row.

With no manual to go by, how a finished word is scored is not known. Collectors who studied the program found more than 1 KB of unused space, enough for a proper list of words, so the game may never have been fully finished. A Home Vision logo was also found inside the program, which suggests another company originally made it.
