Klax

Prototype

Klax is Atari Games' arcade puzzle game in which you catch tumbling colored tiles and drop them into bins to make rows of three. This Atari 7800 version, programmed by David Dentt with graphics by Jerry Huber, was finished around 1992 but never released, because Atari had stopped supporting the console. You can play it here in your browser.

How to play Klax online

  • Move the paddle: left and right arrow keys
  • Drop the top tile into the bin below: Z
  • Throw a tile back up the conveyor: up arrow
  • Pause: F4

Gameplay

Colored tiles roll down a conveyor towards your paddle. Catch them and drop them into the five bins below. Three tiles of one color in a row, whether vertical, horizontal or diagonal, make a “Klax” and disappear, and each direction scores differently. Every tile that falls off the paddle lights up part of the miss counter, and when it is full the game is over. Flashing wild tiles count as any color.

There are 100 waves, each with its own goal: a number of Klaxes of any kind, only diagonals, only horizontals, a points target, or simply surviving a set number of tiles. According to AtariProtos, completing a big five-by-five X on certain waves lets you skip ahead, and the 7800 version has three trick “impossible” levels after wave 100 that no other version has.

About this prototype

Klax was finished or nearly finished when Atari dropped the 7800, and like several other late games it was shelved. In 2002 Lee Krueger of ResQsoft contacted the programmer and got permission to sell reproduction cartridges to collectors.
