Super Skateboardin’

Super Skateboardin' is a 1988 Atari 7800 game from Absolute Entertainment and a follow-up to its Atari 2600 Skate Boardin'. You skate through a huge factory switching off machines and lights before the clock hits 5:15 pm, which makes it more a fast maze game than a trick contest. You can play it here in your browser.

Gameplay

Your after-school job at your dad’s factory is to skate through it turning off every machine and light. You are paid by the power you save, and you must be out by 5:15 pm to enter the skateboarding championship.

Skating past a machine switches it off, and bulbs need a jump. Pass a machine that is already off without jumping and it comes back on. The factory is a maze, and tubes connect the floors; each one leads somewhere different. Crouch to enter a tube and let go to ride it. Meters at the bottom show power use and the time. When you finish, the game rates you from “Lower than Dork” up to “Totally Tubular”.

Tips

  • Find the assembly lines first. They use the most power.
  • Use an assembly line for speed. Get off your board, jump onto the line between the plungers, run along it and jump off the end.
  • Read the doors. An open door means you have already been in that room; a closed one means you still need to visit it.
  • Time your bulb jumps. One good jump can hit three bulbs.
  • Stay away from the roof’s edge. Get too close and you and your board take a long fall.

About the game

Absolute Entertainment published Super Skateboardin’ under its own label, one of the few third-party companies to do so on the 7800. It came out in December 1988 as a follow-up to Skate Boardin’ for the Atari 2600. Despite the name, there are no skateboard tricks to perform; the challenge is finding the fastest route through the building. The manual claims one skater finished in four and a half minutes.
