Rubik’s Cube

Rubik's Cube is the officially licensed re-release of Atari Video Cube, the cube puzzle game that General Computer Corporation made for Atari. The game is the same, but it carries the Rubik's Cube name under licence, and the little cube-solving character is called Marvin the Cube Master instead of Hubie. The manual is dated 1984, and the cartridge is one of the rarer Atari-label releases today. You can play it here in your browser.

How to play Rubik’s Cube online

  • Move Marvin: arrow keys
  • Pick up or drop a colour: Space bar
  • Choose one of 18 game variations: F11 (the console’s Select switch)
  • Start a game: F12 (the console’s Reset switch), then pick one of 50 scrambled cubes and press Space
  • Buzzer for illegal moves: F4 sets the Player 1 difficulty switch; in position A a buzzer sounds whenever Marvin tries to step onto his own colour

The goal of the game

You see one face of the cube at a time and walk Marvin around it, trading his colour for the colour of the square he stands on. Your aim is to make each of the six sides a single solid colour. Odd-numbered games count your moves, and even-numbered games time you. Either way, the lower the score, the better. Games 11 to 18 run faster than games 1 to 10.
