Gameplay
The church is a maze. Kermit has cold feet and wants to reach a taxi waiting at the bottom of the screen, while Miss Piggy chases him to get him back to the altar. Wedding guests, drawn as simple blocks, stand in Kermit’s way. A key wanders around the maze at random: if Kermit touches it, the church doors at the top and bottom open, and if Miss Piggy touches it, they close again. Gonzo stands at the top of the screen as the minister, but he does nothing yet.
Expect rough edges. Kermit cannot actually escape, there is no proper ending, and if Miss Piggy catches him while the doors are shut, the game freezes. The graphics also glitch when Gonzo is drawn while Kermit or Miss Piggy moves to the right. Treat it as a look inside an abandoned project rather than a finished game.
Why it was never released
The game was inspired by the wedding at the end of The Muppets Take Manhattan, a film that did not reach cinemas until July 1984. Atari held a licence for Muppet games, and its designers met Henson Associates in New York to talk through ideas based on the script. According to AtariProtos, the team never found a concept that was fun to play, and the characters looked too crude. Shannon later put it simply: the 2600 “just couldn’t deliver” the recognisable Muppets that Henson Associates had in mind.
The first playable prototype surfaced in 1996, and two earlier builds turned up later. Three versions are known: an early one with a slightly different maze, one dated 8 June 1983 with very little gameplay, and one dated 24 June 1983 with the most features.
