Gameplay
The rules follow the manual of the North American Phantom Tank release, Tanks But No Tanks. You are the last tank guarding an outpost. Each screen sends twenty enemy tanks at you, a few at a time, and a counter under your base shows how many are left. You can have only one shell on screen at once, so a wasted shot leaves you open. You start with five tanks. There are four variations: an easier and a harder game, each for one or two players.
The three screens give you less and less cover: walls and corners on the first, a small island on the second, open ground on the third. Each enemy you shoot is worth 100 points, and ramming one on purpose earns 200.
How Tank Brigade differs
The Bit Corporation and Zimag versions are said to differ only in their copyright message, but Panda changed the graphics, and one AtariMania reviewer thought the new look was worse than the original. You can compare for yourself: Tanks But No Tanks is Zimagās NTSC release, and Phantom-Panzer is the German PAL cartridge sold by Quelle.
