Immies & Aggies

Prototype

Immies & Aggies is a 1983 shooting game that the small American company Zimag planned to sell for the Atari 2600 but never released. The name comes from marbles: "aggies" are agate marbles, and "immies" are glass marbles made to look like agates. On screen, though, the marbles are simple coloured squares. What survives is a prototype, and it plays more like a rough experiment than a finished product. It is still an interesting look at what a small 1983 publisher had in the works. Gameplay

A coloured box at the top of the screen shows the colour you are hunting. Squares of different shapes and colours pop up in random places in the middle of the screen, and you shoot the ones that match. The box slowly shrinks, and when it is gone a new colour takes its place. Sometimes none of the squares on screen has the right colour, so you have to wait for new ones to appear. Now and then small oval enemies roll in from the side.

There are 14 variations. According to AtariProtos, all they really change is how quickly the time runs out.

History

Zimag’s catalogue listed Immies & Aggies for spring 1983, but the company went out of business before the game came out. The only known NTSC prototype turned up together with several other Zimag and Vidco prototypes. The game did reach shops elsewhere: CCE sold it in Brazil under its original name, and Suntek released it in Europe as Spectracube Invasion. The AtariProtos reviewer was not impressed, calling it closer to an unfinished programming experiment than a real game.
