Hunchy II

Hunchy II is a homebrew platform game for the Atari 2600, programmed by Chris Walton and released on cartridge in 2005 through the AtariAge store. You guide Quasimodo through the rooms of Notre Dame cathedral to rescue Esmeralda. It takes its idea from the 1982 arcade game Hunchback, which was loosely based on Victor Hugo's 1831 novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. You can play it here in your browser.

How to play Hunchy II online

  • Move Quasimodo: arrow keys
  • Jump: Space bar
  • Start a new game: F12 (the console’s Reset switch)
  • Save and load your progress: Ctrl + 0–9 saves to a slot, Alt + 0–9 loads it

Gameplay

Each of the game’s 14 levels is a single room of the cathedral. To clear it, Quasimodo has to collect every bell within the time limit, while missiles fly across the room and cathedral guards patrol it. The levels get harder as you go, with new hazards added step by step, and the game has an ending sequence for players who get through all 14. It is a one-player game for the joystick, and it fits in 4K, the same size as many early 2600 cartridges.

Tips

  • Study each room first. The layouts are puzzles as much as obstacle courses, so work out the order in which to collect the bells before you move.
  • Use save states. Later levels take many attempts; saving at the start of a new room saves you replaying the earlier ones.

About the cartridge

The boxed cartridge came with an original label by Justin Hairgrove and a manual by Tony Morse. Players have been very positive about it: reviewers on the AtariAge store praised its tight controls and cleverly designed rooms, and compared it with Miner 2049er and Jumpman.
