Lady Bug

Lady Bug is a 2006 homebrew conversion of Universal's 1981 arcade maze game, written from scratch for the Atari 2600 by John W. Champeau of Champ Games and sold through the AtariAge Store. You guide a ladybird through a garden maze, eating flowers while other insects hunt you. What sets it apart from Pac-Man-style games is the swinging gates that let you reshape the maze as you play. This is the NTSC version. You can play it here in your browser.

Gameplay

To finish a level, you eat everything in the maze: flowers, hearts and letters. Enemy insects come out of the centre one at a time, released as a timer runs round the border of the maze. The green gates turn when you push through them, so you can shut a path behind you and block a bug that is chasing you. Keep away from the deadly poison, too. Hearts and letters are bonus items, and collecting the right letters spells the words EXTRA and SPECIAL, which earn you extra rewards.

History

Lady Bug reached the ColecoVision in 1982 and the Intellivision in 1983. A 1982 Coleco catalogue listed an Atari 2600 version too, but it never appeared. Champeau’s homebrew finally filled that gap more than twenty years later. It came with a full-colour manual and label art, and AtariAge reviewers praised it as very close to the arcade game. Champ Games later made a second version, Lady Bug Arcade.

A PAL version for European TV systems is also on this site: Lady Bug (PAL).
