Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Prototype

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is an unreleased Atari 2600 prototype from 1982, based on the fairy tale and planned as part of Atari's line of games for young children. Greg Easter programmed it and Mimi Nyden drew the graphics. It was never finished or sold, so what you can play here in your browser is a work in progress, not a complete game.

Gameplay

You guide the dwarfs, one at a time, to save Snow White from the Evil Queen. A timer shows the Queen drawing closer with her poisoned apple, and the game ends if she reaches Snow White. In the three-level version of the prototype:

  • The mine: collect diamonds, then the red diamond that opens the way out. The harder setting adds falling rocks.
  • The river: cross on a moving log without falling in. On the harder setting a raven drops dust that can knock the dwarf into the water.
  • The evil forest: trees close in from the sides while you look for the path out.

Why it was never released

According to AtariProtos, Atari’s marketing team kept changing what it wanted. Easter joked that the project had become ā€œSnow White and the Seven Versionsā€. He said the mine was his idea, while the river scene was borrowed from Frogger at marketing’s request. A later version, dated February 1983, cut the game down to a single scrolling mine. Then Atari cancelled its whole children’s line, and Snow White was shelved. A cartridge turned up on eBay in 1999, and it was later sold privately and preserved.
